"Blanking" is the first book to explore the work and vision of architecture firm Schaum/Shieh, founded by Troy Schaum and Rosalyne Shieh. More than a monograph, it opens the doors to their studio as both a real and conceptual space, where recurring themes such as urbanism, tectonics, and preservation are examined through projects and conversations.
The book captures not only visual material from all stages of design but also the spoken exchanges, pinups, meetings, walkthroughs, that shape architectural thinking. Borrowing the term blanking from metal fabrication, Schaum/Shieh use it to describe their collaborative formulation of ideas around a conceptual lexicon for practice. With projects spanning 15 years, and enriched by dialogues with Stan Allen, Garnette Cadogan, Flavin Judd, and Sarah Whiting, the book reframes studio practice as a navigation of values, questions, and propositions.
